Mauricio Gatti: In the Jungle There Is Much to Do

In 1971, Mauricio Gatti was held as a political prisoner in an old military barracks in Montevideo, Uruguay. The hardest part of Gatti’s isolation was his separation from his three year old daughter Paulita.

He created a story for her, to communicate why he was behind bars, and sent it to her in a series of illustrated letters which were smuggled out of the prison. Following Gatti’s release in 1972, the letters were turned into a book via a printing house in the anarchist commune Comunidad del Sur. The book was then circulated through resistance circles throughout Uruguay.

‘In The Jungle There Is Much To Do’ tells the tale of a group of animals trying to organise a better way of living together.
