DARK ROOM by Phyllis Christopher w/ Rosen Eveleigh

with a talk by designer Rosen Eveleigh at 8.30pm

Thursday April 7, 8pm

Pin-Up for On Our Backs, Marin, CA, 1991 by Phyllis Christopher
image description: image of a printed press sheet showing a page from Dark Room, with a photograph by Phyllis Christoper of a person showering in the nude with CYMK colour bars running along the top and right hand side.

Against the backdrop of the emerging HIV/AIDS crisis of the late 1980s Phyllis Christopher set out to make photographs that were hot, sexy and lesbian. What began as an investigation into the erotics of her own self-image quickly developed into a portraits of her friends who wanted in too. In these collaborative images we see Phyllis’s subjects posing, partying, protesting, peeing—and fucking. The images circulated in the first glossy lesbian magazine, ‘On Our Backs’, where Phyllis contributed as photo editor, forming part of a community dedicated to making, producing, and publishing lesbian queer content against a backdrop of the AIDS crisis and urban gentrification.

Please join us for a launch of ‘Dark Room’ with designer Rosen Eveleigh, who will talk about the process of making the book, and contextualise Phyllis’s work through a short talk.
