Paul Gangloff: Freinet Techniques

Since the first experiments, when Célestin Freinet brought movable type and a printing press into his  classroom in 1924, thousands of school magazines were written, typeset and printed by children who were learning to read and write with what would be called the ‘Freinet techniques.’ Besides the development of skills, making these magazines also gave form to a visual language spreading an enthusiasm for a new, emancipatory vision on education through an international network of schools.

The book Freinet Techniques assembles more than a hundred reproductions from these school magazines with their translations, some in English, some in Dutch. They are accompanied by two essays—by graphic designer César Roger and artist and researcher Marie Preston—and introduced with a text by graphic designer Paul Gangloff.
