Paratextile Magazine #01: On Making Clothes

The thesis ‘Paratextile Magazine’: research for a sewing and pattern making publication aims to narrate the research – theoretical background – and the practice – field note activities – that led me to develop a critical fashion practice. This practice consists in the creation of a niche fashion publication titled ‘Paratextile Magazine’. In the thesis, by observing and reading do-it-yourself (DIY) fashion magazines from the past and contemporary published, I aim to showcase how they influenced the process of creating a sewing and pattern making publication that collects stories on ways of making clothes, published in the contemporary. The creation of ‘Paratextile Magazine’ addresses the lack of information about making clothes and fashion production in fashion media. This topic led me to create the first issue of ‘Paratextile Magazine’ with the subtitle ‘on making clothes’ which aims to entangle a discourse on garment manufacturing and making, designing, producing clothes, with the hope of promoting more accessible, on-going, discourse in the field. Not only on the industrial fashion system and its workings, but also on different systems of fashion existing in different areas of the world and produced on large or small scale.
