VOICE UNDER by Ester M Bergsmark
with filmmaker Ester M Bergsmark in conversation with anti-disciplinary philosopher Eva Hayward and designer Mika Kaster Johnson at 6.30pm
Saturday June 8, 6pmvoice under—the very first book of Swedish film director, artist, and artistic researcher Ester M. Bergsmark—gathers a collection of texts which explore and play with the concept of “voice under” through encounters with Ester’s filmmaking, other artists, as well as more theoretical renderings of bodies, gender, trans experiences, desire, violence, and trauma. The intention is to open up a wider sensory register in both the creation and the experience of film by looking closely at, challenging, and playing with different cinematic conventions around truth, authenticity, storytelling, the visual, and the visible.
The talk will take a starting point in Esther’s cinematic works, works that linger in the creases of ongoing processes where trans has no given end goal, but instead is a destabilizing force that on a molecular level undermines patriarchal control apparatuses.
A conversation that resolves not around trans as identity or as representation but from trans as desire. You’re invited to an evening of speculative essentialism, (non-essentialist) trans sensitivity as an anarchic force. To listen to this non-essential voice is to listen to a voice under.
