2020 BUTCHCAMP CALENDAR

ButchCamp is a sort of what’s-what and who’s-who of a certain dykey subsection of the camp aesthetic and sensibility. Gay men have been the natural gatekeepers of classic camp; a sensibility marked by irony, artifice and exaggeration, embodied by shit like John waters movies, the catholic church and Tiffany “lamps”. In the age of Drag Race, much of what made camp subversive to begin with has since become mainstream, lost its power of secret signification. The ‘2020 ButchCamp calendar’ is a weekly illustration of how the subversive power of camp works within communities where Dolly Parton, dutch clogs, Joans of Arc, monocles and Billie Holiday’s dog Mister all mean more than meets the eye.
