A continuous screening of the work ‘Growth’ by Remco Torenbosch.
For ‘Growth’, Torenbosch appropriated a meditation video that he found circulating on financial traders fora. The video shows a montage of a variety of flowers, fields, and gardens – constructed to glorify the beauty of nature in order to catalyze inner peace through digital devices. The work explores how the representation of nature is capitalized by the meditation industry to primarily benefit the performance of labor.
The video carries an endless desire for perfect harmonized health, though embedded in individualism and hyper-capitalism the collective illness of exhaustion and anxiety lingers. The virtual distribution of flowers and the video’s original point of circulation also underlines the everlasting connection between nature and finance: from the very first speculative bubble by tulip bulbs to disaster investors capitalizing on ecological catastrophes.
